Kudos to Chris Koller for keeping healthcare insurance rate hikes for RI employers below 10% for the coming year. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of RI wanted almost 12% for businesses with 50 or less employees, and 14.6% for those with more than 50. United Health, with much less of the market (although they do have state employees) wanted increases of 11.5 and 10.6 but Koller kept them below 7%.
Insurers will surely squeal about this, but Koller's point about "putting pressure on the health plans and indirectly on the system" is where we want our health insurance commissioner to be. Ultimately, as Koller knows, the system needs reform or we will end up in a few years with healthcare costs being simply unaffordable for most employers to provide.
