The depressing news about the need for additional tuition increases at RI's public colleges and the state university - tuition and room & board fees have gone up almost 20% in just two years - shows how state overspending and special interest giveaways year after year hurt the entire state system and those who depend on it. Not only are we shortchanging students at the elementary and secondary levels because of cuts in state aid to education but our college and graduate students as well with these cost increases. If a public college education becomes as unaffordable to most families as a private college education, then we are truly failing the next generation. It's a shame, and it's the direct result of the bad spending choices and lack of a fiscal reform agenda by our legislature. It's one more reason why we need to clean house in 2010. These people have failed us miserably.
